Many dedicated server providers cut corners by installing your server on the same Local Area Network (LAN) as their other customers' servers which poses a significant security risk and also means another customer could monopolise network resources making your server inaccessible. An unsecure LAN could mean someone else who miss-configures their networking could bring your server offline. Some providers use MAC address filtering which prevents certain network technologies working on your server.
